Why?
Why? Because cinema is a passion and a life’s lesson. It was not always like this. First I saw movies just as entertainment and watched them with no special criteria or demands. But when I realized that through movies I had an open window to the human nature, I had to explore that gift.
We live our life according to our will, means and surrounding circumstances. We can’t experience everything that is experienced by every human being in this planet. We can’t be everybody, be raised everywhere, work in every job, live thousands of different lifestyles. Well… we have cinema to do that! Great movies let us live beyond our life, know places we’ll never visit, feel alive in the past or in the future, be faced with decisions we’ll never have to make, put ourselves in different situations, circumstances, feelings. Great films let us learn with the mistakes that characters make, prepare ourselves for what may come in our life, understand the world, the human nature, people and what people do, try to answer those eternal questions: Where have we come from? Where are we going?
Life becomes easier and the world a far more understandable place when you see a Kubrick’s or Bergman’s film, for instance.
Movies are a vehicle of emotions that are experienced by the viewer according to his soul. The same movie is not seen the same way by two different persons – that’s also part of the magic! But what also interests me is how we record the movies we watch in our memories, how we recall a scene, an emotion, a face, a landscape. Faced with an image, a single image, a frame from a film, we can identify it, even if we saw the film some years ago and the film had 90 minutes of length. Our brain is amazing and the way our memory works by threads can make us recall the most improbable scenes and amaze and surprise us with the results.
So, making a quiz using movies as a challenge to our memory, to what we have seen before, to the part of us that cinema made, was something that I found very interesting. I first did these quizzes by mail to a group of about 40 friends and the results were very rewarding. A year later I asked myself: Why not do this for the world? I’m sure there are many movie lovers out there and being able to unite them in a worthwhile competition seems a good idea.
And so I did. Combined with Twitter (that turns everything more personal) I started this Movie Quiz open to everybody from everywhere. I hope you may like it, have fun and if we all get to discuss some movies and exchange some opinions in the comments of the quizzes or via Twitter, the better!
